Why regenerative dairy?

Regenerative pasture management can include reducing synthetic fertiliser and chemical pesticide use, increasing pasture species diversity and changing grazing management.

Nitrogen fertiliser use in Aotearoa New Zealand has increased 629% over the last 10 years. This increase has contributed to the declining health of our fresh waterways, and has made dairy farmers financially vulnerable to increasing input costs.

Dairy farmers moving to regenerative pasture management are experiencing financial resilience against rising input costs, resilience against drought and flood, increased herd health, and an increased joy of farming.

What types of outcomes can be expected from regen pasture management?

How does the NZ Climate Innovation market work for farmers?

1. Create an impact plan

Complete a land assessment and our team will assess your opportunity to sell Claims and earn income from your environmental outcomes.

2. Sell your Claims

Select from our scientifically-supported templates and list your environmental outcomes for sale as Claims on the NZ Climate Innovation market.

3. Collect your data

Sign up to a Pledge to track progress and report the data needed to complete your Claims.

Receive offers on Claims

You can list future, in progress or completed Claims for your environmental outcomes. Once your listing is live, you can receive offers to buy these Claims. These offers can come from private corporations, government agencies and beyond. When your Claim is complete, buyers will receive a Claim report containing verifiable data about the outcomes.

The Healds shifted to regenerative pasture management and within three years they had:

Eliminated synthetic fertiliser and pesticides,

Reduced animal health costs by a third,

Shifted to once a day milking,

Reduced feed bill by just over $200,000.

  • Developed by Troy Baisden

    Te Pūnaha Matatini

Excess nitrogen fertiliser leaches into waterways and groundwater, damaging freshwater ecosystems and human health.

This Claim report shows current and baseline (starting) nitrogen-containing fertiliser applications per hectare, and calculates the quantity of nitrogen application avoided.

The Claim focuses on reducing excess nitrogen in the urine of dairy cattle, which they excrete when their diet becomes too rich in nitrogen. This excess nitrogen generates a powerful, long-lived greenhouse gas, nitrous oxide, and leaches into our waterways, harming freshwater quality and biodiversity.

This Claim report shows reduction in risk of nitrous oxide (greenhouse gas) emissions achieved by managing nitrogen fertiliser application as well as the timing and type of feed used on dairy platforms.

  • Developed by Calm The Farm

Livestock numbers (both total and per ha) are the leading indicator of farming intensity and greenhouse gas emissions on dairy farms. When combined with synthetic nitrogen fertiliser use, they can give an indication of overall environmental impact.

This Claim report provides stock monitoring data to show a sustained reduction in livestock on a dairy farm and calculates the resulting reduction in greenhouse gas emissions.

  • Developed by Calm The Farm

This Pledge supports farmers to capture the data about their reduction in synthetic fertiliser and chemical pesticide use; their increase in pasture species and changes in their grazing management.

The data collected can be used to create and sell Claims that prove environmental outcomes and earn income.

Pledges are developed by specialists in regenerative practices and guide farmers and land managers so they can take action and measure outcomes with confidence.

Claim templates are developed by scientists and specialists in the field so you can buy and trade climate outcomes with confidence.
